This is a math estimate, not medical advice. MET values are lab-measured group averages, so an individual's real walking cost varies by roughly 10–15% with fitness, gait, grade, terrain, and carried load. How the math works

Two steps. Each walking speed has a MET value — its energy cost as a multiple of resting metabolism — from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al. 2011). A MET is then turned into calories by the standard metabolic constant (ACSM Guidelines, 2021): 1 MET = 3.5 mL O₂/kg/min, and about 5 kcal per litre of oxygen.

kcal/min = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) / 200
  (≈ MET × weight(kg) × 1.05 per hour)

kcal/mile = kcal/min × (60 / speed in mph)
kcal/km   = kcal/mile / 1.609344

Net (the walk's own cost) uses (MET − 1):

The net line is the part most calculators drop. A MET already includes the 1 MET of resting metabolism your body spends whether you walk or sit, so a raw MET number is gross. The calories the walk actually adds is (MET − 1)/MET of that — at a 3.0 mph moderate walk (3.5 METs) the net is 2.5 / 3.5 = 71% of the gross.

Worked example

A 180 lb (81.6 kg) person walks at a moderate 3.0 mph (4.8 km/h) — 3.5 METs.

Change the pace and the per-mile number moves less than you'd expect. Because kcal/mile scales with MET ÷ speed, it bottoms out near 3.0 mph: for this walker it's 120 kcal/mile at a 2.0 mph dawdle, 100 at 3.0 mph, 107 at 4.0 mph, and 133 at a 4.5 mph near-jog. In the ordinary 2.5–4.0 mph range, pace mostly decides how fast the mile finishes — not the fuel it costs.

When this calculator is wrong

A MET-based "calories burned walking" is a gross, population-average number, and both words matter. Gross: it counts the resting calories you'd have spent anyway, so about 29% of a "100 kcal/mile" readout at 3.0 mph is resting metabolism, not the walk (the walk's own share is the net, 71%). Population-average: the MET itself is a lab group mean (Ainsworth et al. 2011), not your gait, fitness, or body composition, and the formula is blind to grade, terrain, wind, and carried load — all of which move the real cost.

What to do with the result

Treat the number as a planning estimate, then let the scale calibrate it. If you're adding walking to create a deficit, the net per-mile figure is the honest input — at roughly 71 kcal/mile net for a 180 lb walker, a daily 3-mile walk adds about 214 net kcal, or a little over 1,500 kcal a week. At the classic (and optimistic) 3,500 kcal per pound, that's near a pound a month from the walking alone, before the body adapts.

Don't try to out-precision the estimate. Track your actual weight over two weeks against your intake and adjust by 100–200 kcal if it isn't moving as expected — your scale is a better measurement than any MET table. And if the goal is per-session burn rather than per mile, walking longer beats walking faster: in the 2.5–4.0 mph band, distance drives the total far more than pace does.

For a 180 lb (81.6 kg) person at a moderate 3.0 mph, about 100 kcal/mile gross — roughly 71 kcal of which is the walk itself and 29 kcal resting metabolism. It scales with bodyweight: a 130 lb (59 kg) walker is around 72 kcal/mile at the same pace. The "100 calories a mile" rule of thumb assumes roughly a 180 lb walker.
Does walking faster burn more calories?
Per minute, yes — a lot more. Per mile, barely, in the normal range. Because kcal/mile scales with MET ÷ speed, it's a shallow U with a minimum near 3.0 mph: for a 180 lb walker it's about 100 kcal/mile at 3.0 mph, 107 at 4.0 mph, but 120 at a 2.0 mph dawdle and 133 at a 4.5 mph near-jog. Walking faster mostly finishes the mile sooner; it doesn't add much fuel per mile until you're near the walk–run transition.
Is this gross or net calories?
The headline is gross — the full MET-based figure, which includes the resting calories you'd have burned anyway. The "net" line strips that out using (MET − 1) to show the walk's own contribution. Most calculators print only the gross number and call it "burned by walking," which overstates the walk's added cost by about a quarter.
How many miles do I have to walk to lose a pound?
One pound of fat is about 3,500 kcal (Wishnofsky 1958). At roughly 71 net kcal/mile for a 180 lb walker, that's about 49 miles of walking per pound in added expenditure. Treat it as an approximation: the 3,500-kcal rule over-predicts past a few weeks because the body adapts (Hall et al. 2011), and diet moves the number far faster than mileage does.
Does walking uphill burn more calories?
Yes, substantially — but this calculator uses level, firm-surface MET values and doesn't model grade. Uphill walking, soft surfaces like sand or snow, and carrying a pack all raise the real cost above the flat-ground estimate. If most of your walking is hilly or loaded, treat the number here as a floor.
