This is a math estimate, not medical advice. A field-test VO2 max is a single regression equation applied to a self-run test — expect it to sit within roughly 10–15% of a lab measurement, and further off if the protocol slips. Both tests ask for a hard effort. If you have a heart or lung condition, chest pain, or cardiovascular risk factors, get clearance from a clinician before a maximal run or a brisk walk test, and stop if you feel unwell. For a number you can act on medically, a graded lab test with gas analysis is the reference.

How the math works

VO2 max is the highest rate your body can take in and use oxygen, in millilitres per kilogram of body weight per minute. You cannot read it off a formula directly, so a field test substitutes a measurable performance — how far you run in 12 minutes, or how a one-mile walk taxes your heart rate — and a regression equation maps that to an oxygen figure. This calculator carries the two most-cited equations.

Cooper 12-minute run (1968)

Run as far as you can in 12 minutes on a flat, measured course. The distance is the whole input:

VO2 max (mL/kg/min) = (distance in metres − 504.9) / 44.73

Kenneth Cooper fitted this against treadmill-measured VO2 max on 115 U.S. Air Force personnel and reported a correlation of r = 0.90 (Cooper 1968). It needs nothing but a distance, which is why it is the test most people know.

Rockport one-mile walk (Kline 1987)

Walk one mile (1.609 km) as fast as you can hold steady, then record the time and your heart rate the moment you finish:

VO2 max = 132.853 − 0.0769 × weight(lb) − 0.3877 × age
     + 6.315 × sex − 3.2649 × time(min) − 0.1565 × HR(bpm)

sex = 1 for male, 0 for female · time = mile-walk time in minutes

Kline and colleagues validated this on adults aged 30–69, with a correlation of r = 0.88 and a standard error of estimate near 5.0 mL/kg/min (Kline et al. 1987). The equation is written in pounds; enter kilograms and the tool converts with the exact factor (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg) before the coefficients apply.

Worked example

Take a 40-year-old man, 180 lb (81.6 kg), who walks a mile (1.609 km) in 14:30 (14.5 min) and finishes at 145 bpm. The Rockport equation:

132.853 − 0.0769×180 − 0.3877×40 + 6.315×1 − 3.2649×14.5 − 0.1565×145
= 39.8 mL/kg/min

The reference median for a 40–49 man is 37 mL/kg/min, so 39.8 sits just above the middle of his age and sex band. Run the other test on the same person and the arithmetic is shorter: cover 2,600 m (1.62 mi) in 12 minutes and the Cooper equation gives (2,600 − 504.9) / 44.73 = 46.8 mL/kg/min. Two tests, two numbers — which is the first thing worth understanding about them.

Where your number lands

A raw VO2 max means little without a reference, and the reference is specific to your age and sex. The 50th-percentile medians below come from the Cooper Institute's treadmill data (the same set reproduced in the ACSM guidelines):

Two patterns run through the table. Women's medians sit below men's at every age, which reflects differences in haemoglobin, heart size and lean-mass fraction, not effort. And the median falls with each decade — some of that is ageing, some is that most people train less as they get older. The honest read of your result is against your own age-and-sex median, not against a single headline number. A wearable that reports VO2 max to a decimal place is, underneath, running one of these same equations on estimated inputs; the decimal is interface, not accuracy.

When this calculator is wrong

A formula-estimated physiological ceiling carries an error band wide enough that the single number reads as more precise than it is — the same problem that makes heart-rate-max formulas less useful than they look. The classic 220 − age has a population standard deviation of about 10–12 bpm, and even Tanaka's equation is off by 5–8 bpm for many people (opinions.md O9); a zone built from it can land a full zone wrong. VO2 max field tests inherit the same character. The Rockport standard error of estimate is about 5 mL/kg/min — close to the gap between two age medians in the table above — so the test can place you a whole band off, and the run and walk tests can disagree by more than a category on the same person. The counter-case: for a first-pass fitness check, or for a new trainee, the field estimate is fine and saves a lab visit they are not ready for. The error matters when you are making a real training or health decision off the number.

What is a good VO2 max for my age?
Compare against your own age-and-sex median. For men the 50th-percentile figures run 44 (20–29) down to 28 (60+) mL/kg/min; for women, 36 down to 23. Sitting above your band's median is above-average aerobic fitness for your age; well above it is the range of trained endurance athletes. A number only means something relative to the right reference.
How accurate is a field-test VO2 max?
The two equations here correlate with lab VO2 max at r = 0.88–0.90, with a standard error near 5 mL/kg/min for the Rockport walk. In practice, expect a field estimate within about 10–15% of a lab value when the protocol is clean, and further off when it is not. It is a good screen and a good trend tool, not a lab measurement.
Which test should I use — the run or the walk?
The walk test is gentler and better for beginners, older testers, and anyone easing back into training, because it does not require a maximal effort. The 12-minute run tends to track better for fit runners who can actually pace a hard 12 minutes. If you are on a beta-blocker or another heart-rate-lowering medication, skip the walk test — its heart-rate input is no longer valid — and use the run, or a lab test.
Can I improve my VO2 max?
Yes, and it responds within weeks to months of consistent aerobic training. The reliable pattern is a lot of easy volume plus a smaller amount of hard interval work near your ceiling. Gains are fastest for the untrained and slow as you approach your genetic range, which is why elite values cluster rather than climb without limit.
Why do my watch and this calculator disagree?
A watch estimates VO2 max from pace and heart rate during ordinary runs, using its own model; this tool uses a dedicated field test and a published equation. Different inputs, different equations, different error bands — a few points of disagreement is normal. Trust the trend within one method over the exact number across two.
Is VO2 max the same as my heart rate zones?
